The international jury of the 55th annual World Press Photo Contest has selected a picture by Samuel Aranda from Spain as the World Press Photo of the Year 2011 for an iconic image shot in Yemen.

16 July 2011 A woman prays at the foot of the waterfall honoring the goddess of love and beauty, Ezili. Saut-d’Eau, in the heart of Haiti, is one of the country’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Each year on 16 July in the village of Ville-Bonheur, people celebrate the appearance of the Virgin, Our Lady of Mount Caramel, who is said to have appeared in 1884 on a palm tree next to the falls.

27 March 2011 Jamila, 40, was injured by a small rocket and is now disabled and in need for treatment. Two years after the Israeli operation ‘Cast Lead’, the Gaza Strip still lives in a limbo, worsened by the closure of the borders and the subsequent economic crisis along with the complete isolation of the population.
